Summer Program 2009 schedule

 Culture of Colors

 

The thematic focus on the role and influence of colors and symbolism of color in Japan.

There are more differences than you might think!

 

July 11th:  Tanabata – Star Festival

To make wishes on July 7th TANABATA, people write their wishes on colorful oblong cards, hang them on bamboo trees and put out side of their house.

July 18th:   Lecture:Kimono in Color: A spectrum of Seasons ”

Lecturer: Mrs. Alison Redfoot-DiLiddo,  Asst. Director for Education at CSULB’s Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden

July 25th: Chirashi sushi – Food:            

Chirashi sushi is one of the most colorful of all sushi.

Colors of foods are not only important for the looks, but for nutritional value.

Aug 1st: History of Gold in Japan – making a craft with gold:   

 An explanation about gold crafts and an exhibit of some traditional products from Japan. Japan has a long history of using gold and gold leaf.                        

 Aug 8th:  Kabuki ( make up ) – making a mask.               

An Introduction to KABUKU history and how it uses colors for make up along with different characters. Students make a Kabuki mask.

 Aug 15th: Games:

Games based upon what students have learned about  colors and color related vocabulary.

 

 Aug 22nd: Last class of the program
